Parameter Handling
Google Webmaster upgraded their parameter handling tool a few days ago. Great, isn't it? Well my questions is: Is it really worth your while?
Here is my train of thought.
1. If you are new to this feature and to URL parameters in general and you don't know exactly what you are doing, then you can do more harn than good using this feature. This is only really for the advanced webmaster, as there is just too much that can go wrong.
2. The advanced webmaster, however, surely is already using canonicalisation to handle their site's parameters. Now, while Google says you can use both, I don't see the point in duplicating this? Handling canonicalisation on site also means that other search engines (now let's not forget about them) also get the full benefit.
So why/when should we use the parameter handling tool?
It is very helpful for webmasters who are unable to add any canonicalisation to their site (due to a restrictive content management system for example). But, in my opinion that's the only scenario to use it in.
Hey, anyone want to prove me wrong?
